FEATURE WINES
Sicilian Wine Feature
Sicily has had a topsy turvy history with wine dating back 6000 years. When the Greeks settled the island, they were so impressedby its potential, they named it Oenotria (land of vines). Unfortunately, when much of Sicily left for America, so did quality wine. Luckily many old vines, in extreme climates, were left to be rediscovered. Now, Sicily’s star has risen once again, with some of Italy’s brightest wine makers unable to resist its potential and producing top quality wines from old vine indigenous varieties.
Tornatore
White
Etna Bianco “Pietrarizzo” 2021
Tornatore
From one of the most important contrade (or crus) on Mount Etna, the Pietrarizzo vineyards soar at a dizzying kilometre above sea level. The Tornatore family has been farming here since 1865 on this north facing volcanic slope with rich mineral content, extreme diurnal temperature variation and such site specificity, Etna may well be the Burgundy of the Mediterranean.
TASTING NOTES
The wine has quietly powerful aromas of perfumed orchard fruits: quince, mirabelle, peach and white flowers such as honeysuckle. Then on the palate, the acidity is prouncounced with tropical notes, pineapple and mango, texture from lees stirring, subtle macadamia nut flavours yet upon revisiting, a citrusy evolution unfolds that begs for food.

The nose is charming with pretty violets, deep plums and rich amarena cherries. On the palate, the tannins are moderate and smooth and complimented by fresh acidity, The palate remains lively with raspberries, preserved red plums, kirsch and cloves that linger for a lovely finish.
